I have unfortunate news for everyone in Belfry, KY; Williamson, WV; and the surrounding area: we didn’t want to expect it, but we did. One of the stores we liked going to for many years is closing because it always had good deals on the products it sold. The store I am talking about is Save-A-Lot in South Williamson, KY. More than three employees at Save-A-Lot, whom I will not name, shared with us that the store is on its way to closing and that it would be lucky to make it to September. The employees there said that Save-A-Lot no longer restocks and will continue to sell whatever it has left until it closes. A few employees at Save-A-Lot have said they are already looking for a new job or have found one ahead of time before Save-A-Lot closes. While it’s well known that competitors such as Walmart and the rebuilt Food City hurt Save-A-Lot badly, what put the nail in its coffin was the refusal to fix the bridge you would drive across to get to Save-A-Lot. That bridge was destroyed a few years ago, and the property owner refused to allow anyone to repair it, which hit Save-A-Lot hard in the long run and now results in its closure. We only get to celebrate a 250th birthday once, and I hope that fifty years from now, we’re still around to celebrate the 300th together. But even though America is an independent country, there is no true freedom here until everyone — regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, age, disability, or class — is free from their oppressors. As long as any oppression exists, freedom can’t. No one is free until we are all free. The Declaration of Independence says “all men are created equal,” and the Constitution opens with “We the People.” That means all of us. This country isn’t mine, and it isn’t yours. It belongs to everyone, and it’s a home to everyone, including the Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) community. America was built by our ancestors’ hands, immigrants included, and now it’s our hands that keep building it for future generations, for better or worse. On this Memorial Day, we remember the very people who died fighting for our country and those who are now fighting for it with their lives. It is also a day to remind ourselves that we cannot take our freedom for granted. We take this day to reflect on the pains that were inflicted on our country, such as the American Revolution, Slavery, the Civil War, the World Wars, the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attack, the Insurrection of January 6th, 2021, and more, so that we can remind ourselves to be a better country that everyone dreams of being part of. It’s not only the veterans who fought the wars for us and the soldiers who are now fighting for us that we should remember; we should also remember that America is made up of all walks of life. Because the United States of America is not just mine, nor yours, it is ours. This includes all races, genders, sexual orientations, ages, religions, able-bodied status, disabilities, political affiliations/views, intelligence quotients, and other factors. It is the inclusive people that are the heart of the United States of America, and we should reject any hate because hatred is what divides us. As for Hanukkah, I am somewhat late, as it is celebrated from December 14 to 22. But I still want to recognize that, as other holidays besides Christmas and New Year are important as well. Some know what these holidays are, where they come from, and how they are celebrated. The celebration of Christmas started in Rome around 336, but it was not a major Christian festival until the 19th century, which began on January 1 in 1801 and ended on December 31 in 1900. The original reason for Christmas was to celebrate Jesus Christ’s birthday on December 25, a tradition established by Pope Julius I, combining religious observances with influences from winter solstice festivals such as Yule and Saturnalia.
