A 29-year-old Deaf person named Cody Wayne Downey of Russell Springs, from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, was shot dead by the police in Danville, Kentucky, about a couple of weeks ago, on January 11th, 2026, at Center Estates Apartments, where he resided. According to the Danville police, Danville dispatch received a 911 emergency call around 9:30 PM on January 11th, and the caller reported that there was a man who was attempting to commit suicide with a knife at Center Estates Apartments. According to the caller who made the 911 call to the Danville dispatch, the man was claiming to be harming himself, sending some pictures of his injuries to that caller through social media. The news is saying that the officers in Danville, Ky, went to his apartment for a welfare/safety check, and the police breached his apartment’s door, stating that the reason for doing so was to provide aid. The police say they have made contact with Cody Downey from outside of his apartment, and repeatedly commanded Cody Downey to drop the knife. The police said that Cody Downey came out of his apartment with a knife, and running toward Danville officers, he knocked one of them to the ground. One of the Danville officers grabbed his gun and then shot Cody Downey in the chest up close.…
For many months, I have been using my iPhone as an alarm, relying on its vibration, or haptic feedback, to wake me up as a Deaf person. Not only did I have my phone to vibrate, but I also always had my phone’s sound on the highest setting possible. Using a phone as an alarm clock is acceptable. I am sure many people now rely on their phones for this purpose, rather than having a traditional alarm clock. However, these devices aren’t always effective for heavy sleepers. Speaking of heavy sleepers, I am one of them, combined with being Deaf, so there were the times that it failed to wake me up, and I always had the phone laid beside me on the bed, especially that the phone was either on my arm or my shoulder because as I said I am Deaf so to wake me up is feeling the vibration from my phone. Those times when it failed to wake me up were building my frustration up because I am not a fan of sleeping in for more than four hours. I know that this article comes very late (about two months), but between having a hectic schedule, dealing with other businesses, and taking the time to think more about this issue, here I am. With that said, I am taking my time slowly and writing as my thoughts process, but it’s important that even though it is very late, this conversation should continue because it is problematic. As some of you know, what happened on Wednesday, October 25th? For the past few days, after discovering what happened on that tragic day, I have been thinking over and over about what to say or how to express myself. But I have been unable to; I could not find the words because I have been left speechless or signless. Should I say something or express something about what had happened? Because if I did, it wouldn’t reverse what happened that day. What happened on that day was pure evil and hit too close to home. We are used to seeing something like that happen often everywhere. What happened on October 25th is common here in the United States, but October 25th was different. What I mean by common is that we are seeing a lot of mass shootings happening all over the United States, and that a lot of lives were taken away from them. But it was different on October 25th, 2023, because on that day, there was a mass shooting in Maine, and we thought to ourselves that it was another mass shooting that we were so used to hearing or seeing until we realized it wasn’t.
