The other day I decided to order some saffron after watching a few foods and cooking television shows because I often saw them using saffron in many of their foods, so that had me wanting to give saffron a try. I have never tried them before. So, I have decided to look up what saffron is all about and saw that it comes from some flowers. They are well known in Iran, where most saffron comes from, and they look delicious from a view. I looked saffron up on different e-commerce websites such as Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, Sams Club, and whatnot, then I found some at Amazon that convinced me to purchase one of them from there. The one that I brought is called Zaran Saffron; what got my attention was that it said they are handpicked and have the highest quality grade, which they call super begin.
Many different makers make and sell saffron. I went with Zaran one because of many reviews and several articles that provide a top list of the best maker of Saffron – Zaran was often found to be in the top three of several top ten lists. When it was shipped to me, I was excited because it was something new to try, as I am always curious about something new to try in terms of foods or drinks. I had never tried saffron before until recently, saffron made by Zaran was the first one I have tried, and I brought 3 grams of it. What do I think of Zaran’s Saffron? It tastes like a flower, and that is sure, but I do not like it! It tastes so bitter, and when I ate them, for some reason, I started imagining grabbing the dirt out of the belly button then putting it on some food. Not only that, it has almost a burnt flower flavor aftertaste, and after a couple of minutes, it gave me a weird feeling. I only ate one piece to try; at first, I thought it was a very odd taste, so I decided to put a few pieces on cheese to taste it, and now I know for sure that it is disgusting. The look of the Zaran Saffron is dark red and a bit hard – almost like that beef shredded can of beef jerky. Saffron is from a crocus flower, primarily found in Iran and Spain, France, and Italy. If you get crocus flowers (flowers are purple) and look inside these flowers, you will see a few sticks in there – these are saffron. They are often handpicked or plucked out of crocus flowers and used in foods or drinks such as tea because saffron is considered one of the popular spices, especially in Europe or Asia. Google search is right on what saffron tastes like, which it says they taste sweet and floral. It is earthly and has a complex, nuanced flavor, but also “on the other hand,” it tastes like bitter, metallic, or plastic which they say is often in cheap imitators of this unique and should be avoided. At least on Amazon, the problem is that it says that Zaran’s Saffron is handpicked premium graded one, and it is pure Persian Saffron. But on Amazon, Zaran promised that their product was the real thing, which convinced me in the first place to purchase them. Sadly, they did not back what they said, and not only that; they might as well be the one that makes me not ever want to try any saffron of any other brands because it tasted so bad that I don’t want even to try any of them.
Maybe you would like them; if you are curious as I am, I would suggest you get the smallest amount to try them, which that is something I wished I did in the first place, but I went ahead with three grams instead of two grams which is the smallest one they have by Zaran. As for me, I never will because it is disgusting, but maybe that is just me, and perhaps you would like them. Zaran Saffron is promised to be one of the best saffron that you can buy, so with that, I definitely would not want to try the less good ones.
I am giving this Zaran Saffron a rating of 0.5, half of one, which translates worse.
