Thought?:

I just finally decided to watch the movie The Favourite yesterday; the cast in The Favourite is good, especially Emma Stone as Abigail, Olivia Colman as Queen Anne, and Rachel Weisz as Lady Sarah. I admit that this movie was not what I expected. I assumed that The Favourite would be about Queen Anne and two other ladies, which is in a way since this movie is also biography, but what I did not expect was that it was going to be a wickedly dark comedy movie. Many other critics gave this movie The Favourite high praises, which are something I don’t see; the script behind the film was bizarre with dark comedy, as I mention, and it also has romance in it, especially when it is involved, Queen Anna.

Everything in The Favourite movie is all around Queen Anna, as around Queen Anna, there are two ladies named Abigail and Lady Sara, which both are cousins. Lady Sara is like an advisor/maid to Queen Anna, and Abigail came into the picture when she decided to visit her cousin Lady Sara then ended up serving Queen Anna as one of the maids except that Abigail becomes more of like an exclusive maid out of all which that bothers Lady Sara in many ways. When I say exclusive maid, I mean really exclusive! Ever since Abigail came into the picture, she became a maid to serve Queen Anna, and that ends up making Lady Sara jealous, which encouraged both to compete against each other – Sexually. It gets dark, wicked yet comedy and witty with these three women, which are Queen Anna, Abigail, and Lady Sara. As more tension rises as they passionately compete to please Queen Anna, Lady Sara was more of bossy. She would like to power over Queen Anna by forcing Queen Anna how to run her country while Abigail was more of soft, compassionate and more willing to help Queen Anna to run her country however she’d like.

Queen Anna has skin disease as she had a hard time dealing with the agony pain from it, and she would often have both women to ease that by pleasing her sexually, which was weird, especially when I see their expression. Abigail’s expression was so clear that she does not like doing it, but it was what Queen Anna demanded of her, and at the same time, she does to attempt to have Queen Anna favor Abigail more over her long-time server which is Lady Sara. The competition itself between Abigail and Lady Sara was so dark and wicked. Their bittering, their arguments, and their fights have dark comedy in them, which would sometime have me perplexed. This movie, The Favourite, has dark and wicked comedy that would keep going on throughout the film. Almost the entire time of the film, we would only see everything going on in Queen Anna’s castle, and we rarely would see anything that happens outside of the castle. The film was heavily focused inside the castle with many people around Queen Anna, Lady Sara, and Abigail.

To be honest, there was nothing so special about The Favourite, and that is where I cannot understand why other critics give The Favourite high praises. I agree that there are a lot of dark and wicked comedy scenes in the movie, but they are not the funniest movie, like many critics claimed it to be. Almost the entire time in the film is inside the castle, the only time to my recall that we get to see anything outside of the castle is when Abigail came to the castle at the beginning of the movie and few scenes of ducks shooting practice with Lady Sara and Abigail or Abigail secretly meeting Harley to strike a deal with between two to win Queen Anna’s heart over Lady Sara. Then the rest, the majority of the film, we watch everything that was going on inside the castle along with going forward and back through the secret hall inside the castle between Lady Sara’s room or library to Queen Anna’s bedroom.

The Rotten Tomato has The Favourite movie rated at 93%, which is nonsense, the critic’s rate this movie in high 4s which is also nonsense and because of that, it made me have a high expectation for the film which I admit somewhat failed my expectation. If you are planning on watching The Favourite, I suggest that you have a low expectation by not rating the other reviews, and maybe that helps to be better than what you expected, which is something that I wished I did. During the movie, I did have some laughs and some “huh?” moments, but then when the film was finished, my reaction was “that’s it?” because the critics had me hyped up with how great that the movie is in their mind.

Would I recommend The Favourite? Yes and no. I think that The Favourite movie is a good movie to watch on one of the weekend nights when there is nothing to do. The Favourite film is not suitable for children as there is nudity in it, as you would see Emma Stone naked and others partially nude. The movie was entertaining, but the problem was that it was NOT that entertaining, as many other reviewers made it out to be. If you like dark comedy, wicked, romance, weird, and drama (due to Abigail and Lady Sara), then this movie is for you. Maybe it is funnier and entertaining for you than it was to me. Would I watch The Favourite again? Unlikely, unless in a decade or two decades, I have lost some memory of what The Favourite was all about.

I am rating this movie 3.2, which that translates two inches over good and three inches before very good.
