Alexander Graham Bell: Public Enemy of the Deaf

Some of you may not know this especially if you aren’t associated with the Deaf community and if you are indeed associated with the Deaf community or you are Deaf/Hard of Hearing yourself then there is a good possibility that you know this. If you aren’t associated with the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community or you are one of them then you already have a question in your mind wondering what or who am I referring to the public enemy of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community but if you are associated with the community or you are one among of us as I am Deaf myself then you should by now already know that I am referring to Alexander Graham Bell being the public enemy of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community. Now that I have mentioned that the name is Alexander Graham Bell, those who aren’t associated with or is Deaf/Hard of Hearing immediately recalls that Alexander Graham Bell is known for being a pioneer or an inventor as he invented landline telephone and some of you already know that he has been suspected of stealing the blueprint from Elisha Gray who came up with the mechanics in blueprint to build the first landline telephone that everybody today uses at home using dial-up connection. That wasn’t the only thing that Alexander Graham Bell is known for, he is also known for being a public enemy of the Deaf community for more than a century and even though he may not longer alive but he left something behind that would continue to keep himself as the public enemy even to this day. His organization with several agencies under it calls Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He has himself alone done harms to the Deaf community itself deeply to the point that it left an everlasting scar and his organization is here to always make sure that they find a way to open the wound scar in the Deaf community that he made when he was alive.

Opinion on Anne E. Geers’s Research

Okay, where do I start here? Please note that this is my opinion and over 70 million people in the Deaf community are welcome to share their opinion on this subject as well.

I strongly believe that the research done by Anne E. Geers may be biased or improperly researched. In her article, it stated that she studied a different three groups where one of them would have newborn to learn sign language early on, one with cochlear implantation while learning spoken language such as English and one with cochlear implantation learning sign language. In her research, she stated that the group where the newborn who had cochlear implanted and learnt spoken language could speak more clear and better reading than the other two groups. I must ask, did Anna E. Geers herself handpicked the sign language teacher to teach the child sign language? And what exactly did she mean “sign language”? Doesn’t she realize that all other sign language modes besides American Sign Language has proved to be fail and that American Sign Language has proved to be successful for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing child? Another question, wasn’t she aware of bilingual-bicultural education? The fact that American Sign Language is a visual language, a recognized language at that and it is vital that the Deaf children to learn early on in their toddler age to help the child to understand communication itself so that the child can effectively learn written English through bilingual-bicultural education (American Sign Language and English). So, her “research” on early sign language (what sign language?) exposure and cochlear implantation benefits is much as fail as any. Not only that, cochlear implants does not help anyone to understand word by word because all it does is it gives them a sound and all they are for is to help them to aware their surrounding but not what people says. Her research can do more harm to little human beings and cannot be used anywhere except it can be perceived as Anne E. Geer’s opinion only.

People’s Perception on Deaf People

I would like to remind many of you with a disclaimer for this that this is my view, my thought and my perception of what I see out of the people’s perception on the Deaf people because every Deaf and Hard of Hearing have different experiences therefore they can share what it is to be under the microscope of the people who we labelled “hearies”. I am only sharing what I have witnessed on hand from what the hearies people have a perception of the Deaf people and Hard of Hearing including myself as I am one of many Deaf person in the world. So, I encourage the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to share their thoughts on what it is like to get an idea of how the hearies people view them as or of. Now that we get this out, as I have said that this is my view for getting the idea of what the hearies have a perception of us Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. It is no secret that the Deaf people doesn’t have it easy, in fact they must work as twice hard to survive whether it be trying to get a job from somewhere and being oppressed by many of people for several decades. I have seen, I am certain that many if not all Deaf community can say that when we declare that we are Deaf or Hard of Hearing we would get a reaction from the hearies as if being Deaf means that we are uneducated and took us as if we have mental retardation or in nicer word “intellectual disability” for some reason. There are a few theories but mainly I can blame a few of the people who invented a term words for the Deaf people which is “Deaf and Dumb” so that misled many of the hearies people to think that Deaf people have no intelligence whatsoever hence the word “Dumb”. Whomever invented that term to label the Deaf people several decades ago were obviously uneducated and in the end, they weren’t intelligent so that is irony since there have been many studies that have done on the Deaf people which have found that they can be as intelligent as others if they are being taught in their native language (American Sign Language, British Sign Language, Auslan, Langue Des Signes Du Quebec-LSQ etc.).

12-16-2016 Tidbits

Hey guys and women! How are all of you doing? I hope that all of you are doing well, considering that we are somewhat having a taste of the winter as in eastern part of the United States is at 15 degree, especially over here in the state of Kentucky so it is obviously a bit cold and it is just the beginning of going into the winter. I am doing well myself over here, we got a lot of the heaters going on with the house’s heater, a couple of portable electric heaters and kerosene heater in the living room. With these heats going, the electric portable heaters and the house’s heater is having a bit difficult of catching up to the temperature that we have set for the house so that mean obviously that it is cold here but we are doing fine though. I notice that we just started getting low temperatures for the winter in December, which is a bit different because if I recall correctly, last year and maybe a few years before that we usually hit around 20-30 degrees in the beginning month of January. It’s middle of the month December, we are hitting the range of 10-20 degrees so that’s about 10-15 degrees and one month difference so I suspect that it is a possibility that we will be having a bit colder winter this year than we had last year but the question is how many snows are we going to get this year? I am a bit concerned about that, especially that over here in the eastern part of the United States that we are hitting 10-20 degrees then right back up to 40-50 degrees and then straight back to 10-20 degrees so the winter is bipolar this year as it seems. Climate change? Absolutely and that’s a problem we will be having with the president-elect Donald Trump when he takes the office in the next month because he doesn’t believe in climate change or global warming. What you expect, he is a Republican and that’s common with anyone who is Republicans although I am not saying that every Republicans doesn’t believe in that but unfortunately most don’t.

Hey guys! How are all of you doing tonight? I hope that all of you are doing well, I see that we are already starting to feel the winter as it is reminding us that the winter is in the corner and that we better be prepared for it when they come. Why I said that we better be prepared for the winter? Because the mother nature made sure that they are unpredictable in the eyes of ours last year, when in around at that time in November last year that we are on this year a lot of us figured that it was just going to be what we predicted; Not a lot of snows, just a bit cold and a bit warm on some days but a very few days of blistering cold but we were wronged. The mother nature threw us something that we never thought to predict, a blizzard namely The Snowzilla last year where in eastern part of the United States had several feet of snows and the temperature were almost too unbearable. If you don’t know what I am talking about, referring to snowzilla then I suggest you to look up on a search engine like Google or Bing and look up the snowzilla in New York especially over in Brooklyn. You will see several pictures and videos where all of neighborhoods or in most of New York boroughs were snowed in to the point that no one can get out (literally) as their vehicles were drowned in snows. The winter last year were what we didn’t expect to see but they had happened, in other states on eastern part of the America such as Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, a bit of Tennessee and New Jersey along with New York was the target of the mother nature in the making of snowzilla. I am not going to say that we will be seeing another snowzilla, because I truly don’t know what we will be seeing just like we couldn’t predict the weather for the winter last year and it surprised us several times. So, it’d be better that we be prepared if that’s to happen again or worse, this way we can be more safe than be sorry and expect the unexpected if that’s to happen again.

WPSD Oppression.

WPSD

Some of you may know or some of you may not know but in the recent news for the Deaf community is that there is a protest going on against Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania because some of the students and some alumni have come out in the public saying that the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) oppresses the students or anyone else who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing but in general the Deaf community’s natural language American Sign Language (ASL). Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) is one of few institutions for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing people, Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf is considered the third institution type of school for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people where it offers all levels of education such as Grade, Middle and High school in one place for anyone who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The students along with the alumni who graduated from Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) are very angry with the administrations because they says that they were treated poorly from the administration from WPSD but that isn’t the only problem that the students or alumni have with the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) they also have a problem with the program that the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) offers along with the recent incident where the president or superintendent made an announcement that he is retiring this year.
